3G/ HSDPA protocols unpacked

There are various protocols that are available for wireless internet connections. This article looks at them, starting with the fastest: 1. HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access, also known as 3.5G) : This is the newest type of 3G mobile network. HSDPA allows the end user to receive data at up to 14.4Mbps. (This is not yet available in South Africa though but we are getting there!) That's as fast or faster than many wired broadband connections. All USB modems sold in South Africa are HSDPA enabled. 2.

The 3G/ HSDPA technology has created an unprecedented revolution in communication. Gone are the days when you had to be at the office, home or anywhere where there was a Telkom line to send and receive emails, do internet banking or just surf the net. The other major disadvantage was that if you did not have a internect connection at home then you could not work outside working hours. Field staff suffered the same limitations.

Important message: Vodacom 3G clients must upgrade to VMC-Lite 3.2.1

Vodacom has issued a statement urging their clients to upgrade their connection software to VMC-Lite 3.2.1. According to Dot Field, Vodacom Group’s chief communications officer this is very important as clients using the old software can be connected to the Vodacom network but will not be able to browse the internet.

One of the main issues customers face is changing their APN if they re-install their software after a machine crash or for some other reason. Our APN is mobile.is.co.za and this needs to be changed in the software. Unfortunately every modem has its own software so it is not the same for all pieces of hardware.

For people who just want a broadband Internet connection, trying to decide which wirelesss option is best  for them usually involves having to do ardous research into the alphabet soup of the broadband world.  3G/HSDPA/Iburst/WiMax etc Besides having to deal with this bewildering array of acronymns, each provider's marketing department is keen to tell you why their solution is the best, so reading their brochures is of little help. Vodacom 3G/ HSDPA - The popular broadband service

Vodacom 3G/ HSDPA is the most preferred broadband offering on the local South African market as revealed by that company's interim financial results for 6 months which ended in September.

According to the results, Vodacom has grown its subscriber base to the half-million mark whilst Telkom's clientelle now stands at 491 774. The reason for Vodacom's apparent success is largely driven by negative factors arising from Telkom's delay in proceesing new ADSL lines, the ever-increasing cases of cable-theft and convenience that mobile solutions offers.
