Over the past couple of months our broadband
sales have gone through the roof and its seems that South African’s
have an almost insatiable demand for faster Internet access. Apparently
we, Cyber Connect, are not alone and today Nashua released a press statement saying they are also experiencing a phenomenal growth in broadband sales.
The industry watcher Arthur Goldstuck
predicted earlier this year that overall Internet usage in South Africa
would only grow by 3% in 2007 but that the number of broadband users
would double.
From our experience, and that of Nashua, it seems that there will be
real growth in the number of Internet users in 2007 way above the
predicted 3%. In many respects the number of Internet users in South
Africa is reaching critical mass making online businesses much more
viable than they have been in previous years.
In light of this phenomenal growth, Telkom’s constant attempts to
hold back ADSL in South Africa seem irrational, as it means they are
the ones loosing out on the broadband party, besides doing considerable
damage to the economy. I am not sure why their shareholders aren’t up
in arms demanding heads roll for handing broadband customers to
competitors.
