SEACOM and Broadband Prices - When will the local customers get relief?

Local broadband consumers, beleaguered by some of the highest broadband tariffs, vis-a-vis the international community, were expectant that the commissioning of the SEACOM cable sometime in June would bring the much awaited relief. Reports about the progress made in the laying down of the submarine cable piqued the anticipation that by mid year, broadband prices would nose-dive by huge margins. However, all those promises are turning out to be a pie in the sky after all. According to Internet Solutions (IS) CEO Angus MacRobert, there will only be a small decrease in broadband pricing and media reports quote him as saying that a 90% reduction in pricing is not realistic. To compound the nightmare for broadband users, industry experts have warned that the time-frame for the trickle-down effectsof the SEACOM project is debatable. Broadband consumers would like to know who then knows what is going on and when it is going to happen. Again, what is worrying is where were these so-called industry experts when hopes for cheaper internet connectivity were raised with abandon over the past months? Why did they wait till the last moment to burst the bubble? One can be forgiven for assuming that there is a dark conspiracy by these service providers to continue milking the broadband consumers via high tariffs. Broadband users deserve better. Internet access is no longer a luxury as it has actually evolved into a human right. Access must be cheap to enhance usage and uptake in the country. The broadband consumers still expect lower prices by mid-year as so fervently preached and whoever is trying to hold the market to ransom must be flushed out.
