Different people engage in differnet activities to pass time and these range from bird-watching to window shopping. The proliferation of broadband connectivity has created the virtual cousin of the latter known as internet wilfing, a phenomenon that describes how people surf aimlessly from one website onto another without an end result in mind.
Whilst many users have come across useful information, products or services via wilfing in the same way that some window shoppers have located bargains or that great shirt or gift that they were looking for, caution is required as internet wilfing can contribute to a high consumption of bandwidth.
Users need to monitor how they use their internet connection and steer away from wilfing. Given the DNA of the local South African broadband services, aimless surfing should be on the not to do list.
