Broadband and how computer data is measured?

Most broadband consumers do not know much data they will use when they are carrying out their online activities. Below is a helpful key that can help you approximate how much data you would have consumed per transaction:

  • A single text character = 1 Byte
  • A typewritten page = 2 Kilobytes
  • A low resolution photograph = 100 Kilobytes
  • A high resolution photograph = 2 Megabytes
  • The contents of a CD-ROM = 700 Megabytes
  • The contents of a DVD = 4.7 Gigabytes

Data units

The following unit measurements represent how data/ information is measured on a computer. The list starts with the smallest unit:

  • Bit - 8 Bits= 1Byte
  • Byte - 1024 Bytes = 1 Kilobyte
  • Megabyte - 1024 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
  • Gigabyte - 1024 megabytes = 1Gigabyte
