Channel bonding - A cost-effective inter-branch connectivity solution

What benefits does channel bonding offer?

1. High Speed Communication

For inter-branch connectivity, the Channel Bonding Inter-Branch Service creates high speed communication links between offices/ branches and head office. One of the biggest problems with a single ADSL line at an office, is that it can only send traffic at a maximum of 640Kb/sec even though it can receive traffic at up to 4Mb/sec. The reason for this is that ADSL operates at different speeds when it sends traffic versus when it receives traffic. This puts a limit on the connection speed that can be established between two offices.

2. Increase Upload Capability

By using the Channel Bonding Inter-Branch Service, we are able to combine multiple ADSL lines and increase the client’s upload capability across that line for example, by bonding 3 ADSL lines at an office, the upload speed would increase to a potential 1920Kb/sec and if bonding 5 ADSL lines, then the upload speed would increase to a potential 3200Kb/sec.

3. Increased Redundancy

In addition to the increased performance, the Channel Bonding solution offers increased redundancy due to the very nature that there are multiple lines bonded into the channel. Should an ADSL line, within the bonded channel fail, then the service would continue to operate on the remaining ADSL lines, until such time as the ADSL line is repaired and automatically reintegrated into the channel.

Components of the Solution

The solution requires the installation of a Bonding Router with the appropriate number of ADSL ports at each office including head office and the purchase of a Branch Bandwidth package which will be allocated across the various offices including head office. Note that the bandwidth is counted at each Bonding Router. For example, if you transferred a 50GB file from Johannesburg to Cape Town, it would count as 100GB of traffic. Inter-branch traffic is charged at a much lower rate than international bandwidth.

As a summary, Channel Bonding Inter-Branch Service provides the following merits:

  • Significantly increased inter-branch communications through multiple ADSL lines ,

  • Redundancy - multiple ADSL lines (automatically included or excluded from the bonding solution based on current status of each ADSL line) Includes ADSL modems

  • Flexibility – add more lines and upgrade the Branch ADSL bandwidth when required

  • Monthly pricing includes provision of all the required hardware
